The Town libraryCinema and library

Since the reconstruction of 2003 the interior of the town cinema has been one of Beroun’s prides. Its Dolby Digital Surround EX system rivals those of Prague-based multiplexes. The newly installed comfortable seats with drink holders also contribute to enjoyment of the films. The current capacity in the showroom is 172 seats. Attractively located in the vicinity of the Town Hill Park, Beroun’s open-air cinema shows films from late May to late August. Indicative of its continued popularity is its ranking among the ten most-visited Czech open-air cinemas. The municipal library, now housed in new, pleasant-looking and modernly designed interiors, is steadily gaining readership.

The Talich Beroun (Talichuv Beroun) music festival is an integral part of the cultural offer in the town.. Held every autumn since 1983, it is a homage to the early and mid 20th century world-known conductor of the Czech Philharmony, Vaclav Talich, who was born and lived in Beroun. The festival programme consists of six concerts featuring large orchestras, as well as chamber ensembles and soloists. The festival normally takes place from mid October to mid November. In recent years it has increasingly often played host to young talented musicians.

Beroun has also been the venue for the Trilobite Beroun (Trilobit Beroun) award ceremony for serveral years. Established in 2000, the awards are given annually for the best audiovisual works by the Czech Film and Television Union. In 2006 the ceremony was moved from the Town Hall registry office to the town cinema, which made it accessible to the general public. The modern interiors of the cinema creates a very pleasant atmosphere where the awarded can fully enjoy their success along with the audience. Pottery fairsPottery fairs

Drawing on the long historical tradition of pottery making in Beroun, the annual Pottery Fair (Hrncirske trhy) has become the most visited event of the town. Over twenty thousand visitors come every second September weekend and see production of two hundred renowned pottery workshops from all over the Czech Republic. This pottery festival has been organized by the Municpality and artist Vladimir Izbicky since 1997. Encouraged by the festival’s popularity, the organizers decided to add a spring fair in 2003, where they also invited representatives of other crafts as guests. SprPottery fairsing Pottery Fair (Jarni hrncirske trhy) has ever since been held every first weekend of May, featuring the skills of more than one hundred craftsmen ranging from coopers, basketmakers and brush-makers to smiths, bag-makers and stone-polishers. Both the spring and autumn festivals are also popular for food and drink, whether traditional Czech dishes, excellent wines from Cejkovice, Karlstejn and Bojkovice, beer from the family brewery Berounsky medved (Beroun Bear) or delicious mead. Inseparable from the fairs are also informal concerts of Czech folk music.

Hus Square - open-air stageHus Square – open-air stage

Open-air events in the Hus Square constitute a chapter of its own in Beroun’s cultural life. Apart from the pottery fairs, the Square hosts annual carnivals, Easter and Christmas markets, and also the June "Berounske hradby" (Beroun Walls) multicultural festival, or two days of merry-making and cheerful atmosphere filled with theatre, music and dance. Festive lighting of the Christmas tree and decorations in the town centre at the dawn of Advent is another tradition taking root.
